Permedia™ CO2 Software

CO2 ToolkitPermedia™ CO2 software is a new addition to the Permedia software suite. The toolkit has been developed with the support of the world's leading industrial and academic organizations currently pioneering CO2 storage.

Permedia CO2 software works over the entire range of timescales and lengthscales applicable to CO2 storage, from prospecting and injection, to monitoring and predicting the residence of stored CO2. The toolkit is also designed to accommodate variable data saturations, with both data-rich and data-poor regions in the same model, using the former to populate the latter with reasonable synthetic values.

Built on Permedia

Permedia software's ability to model at extremely high resolutions and flexibility in fluid and rock property descriptions means that it can be easily applied to CO2 containment studies. One such study was described by Bunney and Cawley (2007) in which risked CO2 containment of a giant field in the UK sector of the North Sea was evaluated using a >80 million cell model. Permedia CO2 leverages Permedia's already extensive technology into a powerful new platform for CO2 storage calibration and monitoring.

Research and development

The Permedia Research Group is participating in the IEA GHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 storage research project, using Permedia software, including new CO2 tools, to aid in visualizing, monitoring and forward modeling the IEA GHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 storage site (Weyburn). The work plan will contribute to further understanding the boundary conditions of the storage site at Weyburn.

The Permedia Research Group will also be sponsoring and participating in the Scottish Centre for Carbon Storage Consortium.

The Permedia Research Group is conducting a three-year RnD project around the development of Permedia CO2 to discover and apply novel techniques for understanding CO2 injection and storage at basin, field and reservoir scales. Contact us for more information or for details on participating in this targeted consortium.

Vertically summed, injected CO2 concentrations for different top seal conditions used for quantifying storage volumes.
Risking injected CO2 migration pathways. Green = high charge frequency; red = low.
By calibrating pore volume and topseal capacity to known hydrocarbon fluid distributions, Bunney and Cawley (2007) assessed the storage capacity of this giant field for CO2 storage. The reservoir model consisted of more than 80 million gridcells. Colors represent one of the hydrocarbon distribution realizations.
